Why do women pay so much more than men on their haircuts
As far as I can tell, trimming my hair takes no longer and is no more
complex than a man’s hair cut. I noticed a few men in my salon, walking out £11
better off. I half contemplated telling the cashier charging me that I
identified as a man but I didn’t have the balls, ironically. If I had, this
would have saved me around 12.5% of the cost… that’s almost as much as the pay
gap. To check that this wasn’t just one solo salon, I compared the price gap of
a cut in five of the top nationwide salon chains in the UK. I found that the
average price difference was £16.80.
Some might argue that this is because they offer a woman a ‘cut & blow dry’ whereas men are offered a ‘cut & finish’, but I would counter that both genders should be offered both.
I personally never get a blow dry as it makes me feel like an 80s weather girl. Plus, I resent paying over £20 to essentially have my hair dried nicely, which lasts only until I wash it. Though perhaps that’s just me.
